What's a nice film like you doing in a place like this?

Slumdance was many more films than are listed here. We added films so fast we didn't even have time to write them up. And what would be the point now? Do you really want to know that you missed the Best Sex Scene winner in DIVERSIONS? Or the queerness of Steven Velky's CAIN UNCUT? Or the hit of the Build Your Own Festival Experience, RESPECT MY ASS? Or that classic undie video, HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT, that our new friend Sarah brought by for the Wednesday night party?

Really, stop torturing yourself. You weren't there. And there will never be another one. So just do what everybody else does--say you were there even though you never even heard of Slumdance until today.

AFRO PROMO

World premiere feature. Slumdance is extraordinarily pleased, and a bit startled, to program this fascinating film from the producers of HOMO PROMO and TRAILER CAMP (which played at last year's Sundance and Toronto Film Festivals). In the words of producer Jenni Olson: "Afro Promo is a feature-length compilation of coming attractions trailers from black films of the 1940s, '50s, '60s and early '70s. This historical overview scans the social issue films, plantation dramas, and African safari movies of the 1950s and '60s, blaxploitation, music and sports biographies, and other genre examples of the '70s, as it tracks the burgeoning careers of such popular stars as Sidney Poitier, James Earl Jones, Billy Dee Williams, Bill Cosby, and Dianna Ross. Entertaining and educational, Afro Promo provides a compact glimpse at the representation of African Americans through thirty dynamic years of American cinema history." AFRO PROMO is co-curated by Karl Knapper and Jenni Olson.

HABIT

World premiere feature. HABIT is a tour-de-force effort by Manhattan filmmaker Larry Fessenden, who wrote, directed, edited and stars in this stylish, erotic and terrifying film. We're saying nothing more about it, because the film contains a startling twist that is best experienced cold. You could say it's our CRYING GAME, if you really wanted to.

10 p.m. Tuesday, January 21

DON'S PLUM

Directed by R.D. Robb, this world premiere feature is a raw and gritty look at one night in the life of some rich L.A. kids who spend much of their time in a diner called Don's Plum. This sharply observed, largely improvised film contains a stunning ensemble cast: Scott Bloom, Kevin Connolly, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Amber Benson, Jenny Lewis, Heather McComb and Meadow Sisto.

THE HIGHLINE

Documentary. Filmmaker David Eberhardt took a cross-country journey with modern-day hoboes and chronicled it in this poignant snapshot of a generally unseen America. Eberhardt has since given up his permanent address and now rides the rails himself. Slumdance is honored to have the exclusive opportunity to present THE HIGHLINE. Music by Tom Waits.

Available as part of the "Build Your Own Festival" Experience in the Slum. Stop by after noon on any day and ask for it by name.

HEY, HEY IT'S THE MONKEES

How could we resist? This documentary on the Pre-Fab Four includes fun facts, footage from the cult classic HEAD and cameos by Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa and Jack Nicholson. After watching this, you may actually like the Monkees. World premiere.

Available as part of the "Build Your Own Festival" Experience in the Slum. Stop by after noon on any day and ask for it by name.

TRAILER

When we talked to Slamdance (we're on speaking terms), we both noted certain trends in independent film of late: Twentysomethings Talking, the Tarantino Splatterfest and the Movie About Making a Movie. Slumdance is proud to present the innovative TRAILER, which is all three.

8 p.m. Saturday, January 24

HANG YOUR DOG IN THE WIND

One twentysomething movie is just not enough. You know the routine: witty dialogue, attitude, flamboyance, characters who seem to think we care. Funny, beautifully shot, presented in 35mm black-and-white. Written and directed by Brian Flemming. John Pierson is trying to make famous a HANG YOUR DOG clip--which he calls the "funniest thing I've ever seen"--on his new TV show called "Split Screen." You go, John.

4 p.m. Friday, January 24

SHORTS PROGRAM

Slumdance has slapped together a collection of odd shorts. They include: THE FROG PATH by Jonathan Emery; DEATH OF A CLOWN and RED FISH by Wesley M. Smith; WASTOID by Douglas Glazer; and BROKEN HORSE by Michael Cahill.

Tons more not listed here are available as part of our "Build Your Own Festival" Experience. Stop by the Slum any day after noon and look at the menu. We'll set you up.
