Fair Use Press is delighted to announce the publication of the book Fair & Balanced: A Play in One Act, a biting satirical attack on Fox News and its claim of ownership to the words "fair and balanced." Playwright Brian Flemming, who co-wrote the Off-Broadway smash hit Bat Boy: The Musical, says this brisk one-act comedy is intended "to be read, to be performed, but mainly to ridicule and antagonize the Fox News Channel and a certain tragic figure named Bill O’Reilly."
For his first major work for the theatre since Bat Boy, which was one of the top ten most-produced plays of the 2002-2003 season in the U.S., Flemming has turned “Fair” and “Balance” into characters. The plot: Fair and Balance are prisoners trapped in a dungeon deep in the bowels of Fox News headquarters, and every night at 8 p.m. a character named "Bill O'Reilly" comes down into the dungeon to torture them. But tonight is a special night. Tonight O'Reilly makes a mistake, and Fair and Balanced are able to turn the tables on him. They put him on trial, but now that he is at their mercy, will Fair and Balanced do to O'Reilly what he has done to them?
Not to reveal too much of the plot, suffice it to say that in terms of taste and decorum, where Fox nemesis Al Franken draws the line, Flemming gleefully, profanely crosses it.
Fair & Balanced: A Play in One Act, and Other Short Works is available for purchase now at www.fair-use.info in the Adobe Reader e-book format and will be available in a softcover edition in October. In addition to the play, the book includes a photo essay by Flemming on pro-war demonstrators and other essays on right-wing politics.
About the Author
Brian Flemming co-wrote (with Keythe Farley and composer Laurence O'Keefe) the off-Broadway hit Bat Boy: The Musical, which won two Richard Rodgers Awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Lucille Lortel Best Musical Award, the Outer Critics Circle Best Musical Off-Broadway Award, and eight Drama Desk nominations. It is published by Dramatists Play Service with a soundtrack album distributed by RCA/Victor. An independent filmmaker in addition to being a playwright, Flemming wrote and directed the feature film Nothing So Strange, a faux documentary about the assassination of Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, which won the 2002 New York Times Claiborne Pell Award for Original Vision at the Newport International Film Festival and has played at film festivals throughout the U.S. and Europe. Nothing So Strange will be released in theaters in Fall 2003.
