Feed The Bears

paulfan94.jpg

Any excuse to relive the fleeting moment when I was arm in arm with Mr. Westerberg. While he has probably never given a bear hug in his life, he sure knows how to write a song for a bear.

Half The Mats Are Better Than None

I'm sorry to say I won't be at the Greek Theater tonight to witness Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson together again for a whole two songs as they open the festivities for Open Season.

But tomorrow you will be able to get the soundtrack of the movie written and compiled by the one & only Westerberg. You can preview the whole album here and I can positively submit a very positive review. One might venture a "who would of thunk" Sir Paul could make the fit with an animated movie but frankly he's perfect. Never has there been a more sentimental punk.

And good thing Tommy's not too busy with Axl's Guns to show up on bass for a couple tunes. What might Paul and Tommy have been thinking as they recorded {This is Where} "I Belong"?

Why I Hate Joe Escalante

Joe Escalante has no business being a DJ. Aside from normally being the best radio station out there on the airwaves (after all they have Steve Jones) Indie 103.1 really fucked up when they made Escalante the morning drive time DJ. One might say to me, just turn it off, you don't have to listen. I do a lot of driving every day. I like chatter on the radio when I'm trying to wake up and there are stinky dogs in the car. Morning Becomes Eclectic doesn't start till 9AM and I actually like Adam Corolla some of the time but not every second. It seems every other station is on commercial break at the same time except Indie and I hope for a music block which is always good but sometimes I get stuck listeneing to Escalante twitter nervously, not listen to his guests answers and generally be an ego-driven one-time rock "star" lacking any humility who thinks he's got something to say.

On Monday his must-be suffering coworker Liz Warner was reporting on the Banksy art show that caused a controversy over having a live painted elephant in it. Escalante blurted out that he HATES art shows. HATES them. But guess what he did over the weekend? He went to the Banksy exhibit. Why? Because it was the hot spot to be. Because he could say he was at the same place where Brad and Angelina were spotted and because he could say he bought some art and spent too much money. But he HATES art shows. He went on to say he only likes a few artists but not many. He dropped a few names that were so "he's so controversial that he must be cool therefore I like him" and another "he's made himself so commercial by being cool he must be cool therefore I like him". That's great, Joe. You're really convincing me. How supportive you are of your fellow artists.

Twenty minutes later they had the "marijuana lawyer" on. Liz asked him a very good, detailed question. The guy started to answer it when Escalante interupted with another question, didn't let the guy get five more words in before he interupted again and one more time before the guy said, "back to answering Liz's question..." Thank God someone was listening.

Before he got the gig as morning jock (and because after his rock career he became a lawyer) he did his Friday show where he answers musician's and actor's questions concerning artist law. He does the same not listening thing there. Can't tell you how many times I heard a question and he'd answer as if it were a different question. The person would either ask again two more times or give up and accept what rambling answer they got.

Was NO ONE paying attention to this? Is he such a nice guy that it goes right over the heads of the powers that be? I don't care what Dickie Barrett said to piss off those powers (they also must be nervous twitterers) - he was far and above a professional comparatively. And the "Wino Wednesdays" segment? I like wine as much as the next guy but with Mister "I only really like Bordeaux" - it makes for really boring radio. Shouldn't I be relaxed and humored on my drive? It's just more road rage when I click off to KROQ where suddenly Kevin & Bean look like geniuses.

We Should Do This More Often

Paris Hilton and I have something in common...sometimes you're just too busy having fun to eat. Of course this means the liquor goes quicker to the system and then eating just doesn't seem important. Thankfully I was on foot during my day of busy-ness instead of driving in my rare Mercedes...Not

Last night's art party at Barsac was, in my rose (as in wine) colored opinion, a success. Aside from the fact that the dining room was pitch dark and you couldn't really see the art that was hanging in it, the party room was bright and packed with well-wishers including strangers, one that guaranteed a red dot on one my painted photos. Our private waitress told me that in her two years of employment there, this art provoked the most talk and inspection. After that the rest is a blur. I hope everyone tipped her well.

Looking back it seems like I was barely able to talk to anyone at any length but I hope they all know that my perma-smile was because they were there. And the art will be there thru October, so if you missed it, go by for a little lunch when the dining room is bright.

Mmm, lunch. What a concept. Goes well with a little hair of the dog. Hey, Elliot, could you run and get me an In 'n Out burger and a margarita?
