Sex

There's a word for it

And it rhymes with "slut": Evangelical teens are actually more likely to have lost their virginity than either mainline Protestants or Catholics. They tend to lose their virginity at a slightly younger age — 16.3, compared with 16.7 for the...

My God

Is marriage really (warning: sexually explicit text) this bad? Sometimes it sounds like a living Hell*. Like I always say, I won't get married until gays and lesbians can also get married -- and then I'll find another excuse. Which...

How to have fun with an anti-pornography zealot

Abstinence-only education

You'll almost surely be surprised by what you learn about abstinence-only education at this site about abstinence-only education. It's all about abstinence-only education. (And, yes, I'm trying to help them with their Google-juice on the search term "abstinence-only education.") Abstinence-only...

Progress on porn regulation

State of California officials are following up on their pledge to protect sex workers in the same way they protect hospital and lab workers. Two adult video companies have been fined: State officials have taken unprecedented regulatory action against the...

Jessica Dee tests positive for HIV

Jessica Dee has HIV partly because the general squeamishness people have about discussing porn means that the main people who talk about it are right-wing zealots (who don't care about the sinners who perform in it) and porn producers (who have a financial incentive not to care about the people who perform in it). If you're wondering why I keep talking about this porn crisis on my blog (hi, Mom!), that's why.

Larry Flynt: Move along, nothing to see here

flyntThe sex workers who are currently so ill-treated in his industry do matter. Instead of fighting the inevitable, Larry Flynt should be using his position in the industry to fight for them.

"Employer-employee issue"

"You couldn't imagine a construction company sending a person to a work site without a hard hat, and nor should we think of someone in an adult-film industry production company working without a condom."

Regulating porn

condomsTaco Bell cannot employ a person without giving that person a safe work environment that can be inspected without notice at any time by the state. The state also tells Taco Bell that there are certain things it cannot even ask an employee to do (to work without breaks, for just one example).

The question of whether the state of California should be allowed to tell a business what it can and can't ask of employees has already been answered. The state already does just that.

Porn matters

The pornographer's right to expression doesn't rank very high on the average person's list of priorities (even if buying the latest porn DVD does). But pornographers' rights do matter.

Sex worker story

Check out a well-written tale by Pagan in her great blog Peep Show Stories: "It was a slow day at the dungeon; I was feeling a little sluggish--definitely not prepared for what was about to unfold."

Let them eat HIV: Who failed Lara Roxx?

lara roxxLara Roxx, who is too young to legally drink in a bar, has HIV not just because she participated in a dangerous sex act. She also has HIV because there was nobody to stop the producers from dangling money and other inducements in front of this young woman to get her to take that risk.

It's important for porn to be legal. The government has no business outlawing sex or sexual fantasy. But this principle is not so sacred that we need to allow an industry to exploit and endanger its workers. There's no fundamental right to express HIV. There's no right to pay someone to play Russian roulette for your entertainment.
