Yet another myth I believed

I grew up believing that Social Security was always one step from bankruptcy. It may work for a few more years, went the standard line, but it will never be there for you.

Just about everyone I talk to has the same impression. Mention Social Security tax to someone under 40, and they'll roll their eyes. Most young people seem to believe they are paying hefty amounts into a program that will disappear long before they can benefit from it.

It was only last year, when I started learning the basic facts about the program and its current condition, that I realized that "Social Security will never be there when you retire" was largely a myth. And this myth seems to have been cooked up by Social Security's enemies, specifically to undermine public support for the program.

Looks like the Bush Administration is actually going so far as to break the law in order to keep good news about this successful government program from the public.
