Kansas City screening coming

Open Circle, the organization hosting the Kansas City premiere of The God Who Wasn't There on November 8, is recommending early ticket purchase, as seats are limited and the event is getting serious advance press in KC.

From today's Kansas City Star (reg. req'd.):

News from the Department of Understatement: There will undoubtedly be several lively discussions following the screening of “The God Who Wasn’t There” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Tivoli theater.

Written and directed by Brian Flemming, who will attend the screening, “God” takes on Christian fundamentalism in the same way that “Bowling for Columbine” satirized the gun culture and “Super Size Me” tweaked the nose of Ronald McDonald.

In the movie Flemming (best known as the creator of the off-Broadway hit “Bat Boy: The Musical”) uses his own boyhood as a fundamentalist Christian and his subsequent investigations into church history to make the case that Jesus never existed.

After the screening Flemming and a panel of local religious educators will have a, um, discussion.
Tickets cost $8 in advance, $10 at the door and can be reserved by calling Open Circle at (816) 931-0738 or via the Web at www.Open CircleOnline.com.

Actually, Flemming’s premise is nothing new, although delivering it via the medium of satiric documentary certainly is. The film has generated controversy wherever it’s played but is being taken seriously enough that Flemming was recently interviewed by Christianity Today.

To read the piece go to www. christianitytoday.com/movies/ interviews/brianflemming.html.

More to come from the Star and the local alt weekly, The Pitch.

You can buy advance tickets for $8 each directly at the Open Circle site. As always, all proceeds go the the hosting organization; Beyond Belief Media never takes a cut of theatrical box office.
