Bat Boy: The Musical opens on London's West End to reviews that aren't so much mixed as they are polarized.

Following our West End opening last Wednesday evening at the Shaftesbury Theatre, we have our fair share of good reviews from the London press (click "reviews" near the bottom of the left-hand navigation list). But, unlike in New York or Los Angeles, we also have a heaping helping of bad reviews. And "bad" puts it mildly. I mean, the bad reviews are just plain nasty. How nasty? Try the Telegraph on for size: I can only conclude that everyone involved in Bat Boy: The Musical has bats in the belfry. Unless the entire show is an elaborate scam like the one envisaged by Mel Brooks in The Producers, it is hard to imagine that anyone with a smidgen of sense could believe this limp little spoof would thrive. And that's just the first two sentences. The vitriol is really quite exciting and unexpected. Over at the Dress Circle Message Board, a center of London theater chat, the arguments about Bat Boy are extremely polarized. Some people think the play is innovative and refreshing, while others are cheering for it to close. Not only do these detractors dislike the musical--they actually want it to disappear from London. We didn't create Bat Boy to piss anyone off, so it's a nice bonus. I'm reminded of John Waters' reaction to this Catholic News Service review of his upcoming movie A Dirty Shame: Because of almost nonstop rough, crude and profane language, full frontal nudity, sexual imagery, obscene gestures, scatological humor, casual portrayal and descriptions of deviant sexual practices, a glorification of freewheeling sex and some sacrilegious imagery, the USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is O -- morally offensive. Waters' response: "I don't know if I can get a better review than that." (Btw, Bat Boy contains almost the same catalog of moral offenses as A Dirty Shame. Bring the kids!) While I will always have a warm spot in my heart for the original Bat Boy production that Keythe Farley directed at the little Actors' Gang theater in 1997, Mark Wing-Davey's staging of the show currently running at the Shaftesbury is far and away my favorite fully realized production to date. It's big, it has an intensely committed cast, and it doesn't tell you how to interpret it--there are moments where some audience members weep next to others who are exploding with cruel, mocking laughter. So I highly recommend that you see it. I hope you love it. Or hate it. Either way, please do start an argument with someone on your way out... A play by Americans, set in the U.S., that was already a hit in the U.S., with an American in the lead role, brought to London by an American producer... There are just a few critics who don't like it when audiences roar with laughter. (As everyone around me was doing the two times Ive seen it.) What's left for the critic to do if the audience has a completely satisfying experience at the theatre? What function does he serve? You should have written something that makes everyone confused.
