Stating the obvious

Dear U.S. conservatives,

Some of you are outraged at the outrage shown by U.S. citizens over the torture of Iraqi prisoners of war by U.S. troops. You wonder, where is the outrage at Al Qaeda and the perpetrators of the grisly scenes in Fallujah?

For your information, I am outraged at the atrocities committed by the enemies of the United States. But I make more noise about those committed by our side.

Why? Because I am a citizen of the United States. I don't have oversight responsibility for Al Qaeda. It is a criminal cult that answers to nobody, and I would like to see it destroyed. It wouldn't do any good to petition Al Qaeda with my grievances. I might as well petition the Mafia. Neither are interested in my opinion.

On the other hand, the United States government does answer to me, as it does to all U.S. citizens. There are documents laying out this principle. Perhaps you read them in high school.

I make more noise about abuses committed in the name of the United States because a) I have this weird idea that we're supposed to be better than people like Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, and b) The noise I make about U.S. policy can actually make a small but real contribution.

I loathe Al Qaeda, but I've never spent a minute of the activist part of my life trying to kick it out of office. It would be a minute wasted. I have, however, spent many hours trying to kick George W. Bush out of office, largely because he has done such a horrible job fighting Al Qaeda and such a stellar job giving Osama bin Laden exactly what he wants.

If you truly care about the long-term security of our country more than you care about puffing up your chest, you're welcome to join me in this useful effort.

I consider myself a conservative and disagree with your views on Bush. But I totally agree with the gist of your open letter to conservatives: we are better than terrorists and we should act accordingly. We should hold ourselves to higher standards and demand that our military do the same. Well said!
